In today’s world where the word “style setter” is an overused term, there’s one woman (and soon-to-be mom) who is truly worthy of the title. We’ve been taking fashion cues from her since she was an editorial assistant at Sassy (no, seriously) and then, when she co-founded Lucky, we of course really started shopping and wearing the items she considered cool.
Andrea Linett is a veteran fashion editor and bonafide style setter who we’ve always admired as an industry trail blazer. And now, 9 months pregnant with her first child, we’re of course beyond curious as to how she’s navigating dressing her changing shape and what her thoughts are on pregnancy fashion in general.
In addition to her creative director role at jewelry company Iconery, plus writing her blog, I Want To Be Her, Linett has also just released her second book, “The Cool Factor: A Guide to Achieving Effortless Style, with Secrets from the Women Who Have It.”
Effortless style is something she has in spades and she managed to maintain her very signature look throughout her pregnancy.
Here, Linett shares her go-to pregnancy looks and the pieces that have carried her through the last 9 months.
When are you due and do you know what you are having?
July 1st, a boy
How would you describe your personal style?
I always say “untucked glamour” — I’m not very good at looking polished, so I don’t really try anymore. Dressing up for me is always a little casual somehow (I always like to dress around a good pair of black skinny jeans).
Did you change your beauty / exercise or any other habits during pregnancy?
I’ve pretty much kept things the same and added a belly rub-down every night with something rich like pure shea butter. Also, of course I cut out all things that one can’t use like retinoids, etc. and am way more into organic products.
Does your maternity style change much from how you usually dress?
Not really — I’m pretty much wearing the same kinds of things and just filling them out way more! I also have some pants extenders that are awesome — you buy them on Amazon and they come in a multipack. And I am definitely wearing my overalls more!
What are the items that stylishly carry your through your pregnancy?
My beloved vintage denim jackets, which I layer under and over everything, tee shirts from my own line Jolie Laide are super roomy so they’ve been perfect, my many vintage Indian hippie tops, a favorite worn-in leather jacket, No. 6 clogs and clog boots and Tripp skinny black pants that I now wear with that extra button tab thingie that I got on Amazon.
As a working/busy mom, what do you feel has been the biggest challenge of this pregnancy?
In the first and now in the third trimester, just not getting too tired in the middle of the day. Somehow I find if I hit the ground running and stay active all day, I don’t get too tired.
What are 5 essentials you cant live without?
1. Coffee (I still drink it, but am just super careful about only having a half caff in the morning and then one again at around 4:00), 2. Pure shea butter and Egyptian musk lotion, which both smell like heaven to me, 3. Josie Maran Argan oil tinted moisturizer which I heard she stopped making and I am kind of freaking out, 4. Good lip balm like L:A Bruket which I have in every bag and pocket, 5. A great scarf (I never leave home without one!)
What are your favorite maternity jeans?
I haven’t been wearing them but I bought and returned several pairs. The only ones I kept were Zara’s — the legs were still fitted and the wash was good, but I’ve yet to rock them.
After a full day working, what is the quickest and easiest tip for looking “pulled together”?
A little bronzer like Guerlain’s Terra Cotta and a great blazer or fun jacket like my hand-sewn Alix of Bohemia one — it’s like rock ’n roll couture — follow her on Instagram, her designs are amazing (alix_of_bohemia)
What’s your go-to maternity look when you need to get dressed up to go out at night?
My Tripp skinny black jeans, a Jolie Laide tee, lots of necklaces (Ten Thousand Things, Mara Carrizo Scalise, James Colarusso, Matthew Swope and Lou Zeldis are favorites) and my amazing go-to Alasdair velvet Dickson blazer, then maybe a Rick Owens wedge bootie, Maria Cornejo wedge sandal or No. 6 platform slide.
What is your staple footwear while pregnant?
No. 6 clogs and clog boots. I don’t do flats unless they’re Birkenstocks and that’s usually only at the beach.
What is your best style advice to pregnant women trying to find their maternity look?
I would stick with your regular look and just make tweaks to accommodate that belly! You’re still going to want to feel like yourself no matter what. Also, jewelry always helps make me feel a little glamorous. And I feel like you can get away with funkier pieces because they look cute with the belly. No need to be sensible just because you’re pregnant!
With everything going on in your life, how do you find balance between work, your marriage, your pregnancy and nurturing yourself in any way?
I always make time to work out in the morning or to get a mani or pedi at the end of the day if I need one, and I just booked a pre-natal massage which I am super excited about.) My husband and I always have fun dinners, too.
Lastly, whats been the most surprising thing about being pregnant? What advice would you share with others?
I am surprised at how special it makes you feel and how I don’t even miss my wine (too much!) and it’s just been more fun than I ever expected it would be.
